What a sewer camera inspection actually shows in an older Wichita home

A sewer camera inspection puts a fibre optic camera down the line through a cleanout and shows you the actual condition of the pipe: the material, the joints, any bellies holding water, root intrusion, cracks and separations. On a Wichita property it also tells you whether you have clay tile, cast iron or PVC, which decides everything about the repair.

The right time to do one is before buying a house in the older neighborhoods, before quoting any lateral repair, and after a second blockage in the same line. Buying a house in Riverside or College Hill without one is a genuine risk, because a failed lateral is a five-figure problem that no standard home inspection covers.

What the camera cannot do is tell you exactly how deep the line is or where it runs. That needs a locator, which transmits from the camera head so the depth and route can be marked on the surface. Any quote for a dig repair should be based on a located line rather than an estimate.

Bellies are the finding people least expect. A section of pipe that has settled holds standing water, solids drop out in it, and the line blocks repeatedly in the same place. Clearing a belly does nothing about the belly, and no amount of jetting changes the grade of the pipe.
